Woking hoover hoader exhibits his work at The Lightbox
JACK Copp claims he had hoover-phobia as a child.
Now at 23 the ex-art student has collected over one hundred vintage and modern vacuum cleaners that are currently being displayed as an exhibition.
Jack is showcasing the highlights of his collection, which dates as early as 1923, at The Lightbox art gallery and museum in Woking until January 31.
He explained to The Herald how such an extraordinary hobby began: "My grandmother used to look after me in the daytime when I was a toddler. I remember being terrified of her hoover. "Then one day she turned it over to show me how it worked so I wouldn't be so afraid.
"After that I became interested in the technology and the mechanics of hoovers. When I was five or six, as soon as I could hold a screwdriver really, I was fixing them for people.
"Friends and family started to give me old hoovers that they presumed to be broken and my collection started there.
"I'm interested in the mechanics and the engineering, but there is also a sociological and historical aspect to these machines.
"They used to be status symbols for women in the 1920's, and were used in advertising to depict the perfect homes and families, I find this interesting."
Jack who lives with his parents in St Johns Rise, Woking, said: "My mum and dad don't mind about the hoovers. I think they think of all the things people of my age get up to, they are pleased that this had led to something productive."
The exhibit is just the beginning of a rip roaring success story for young Jack, as a result of the display, documentary film maker, Jen Garrard, has produced a short film about the hoover hoarder that will be entered into various film festival competitions in the summer.
Not only this but the museum in Chobham Road, has also offered him a job as part of their publicity team, he has been there two weeks and is said to be "enjoying his job."
Entry to see Local Collector's Showcase: Hoovers 1923-2000 is free.
The Lightbox is open Tuesday - Saturday 10.30am - 5.00pm and Sunday 11am until 5pm.
